This scene is SO important. Maleficent is with someone she trusts, someone she considers a friend. And then the next thing she knows, she wakes up in pain, bleeding, with her wings burned off. A huge part of her has been destroyed.

Rape is so prominent in our culture that it is in a Disney movie. Maybe not explicitly, but it is very clear what this scene represents and it is so sad.

I fucking cried my eyes out during this scene

AJ even confirmed that this is what this scene was a metaphor for (x) - just because i saw someone say today that this is not what this scene is about

'We were very conscious that it was a metaphor for rape': The actress explained how the scene in which her character has her wings ripped off her body while in a drug-induced sleep had to be something 'so violent and aggressive' that it would make her 'lose all sense of her maternity, her womanhood and her softness'

I never thought it was a rape scene till my friend read this article saying how much she hated this movie because of Disney having a rape scene.

Angelina did great here but wow a rape scene in a disney movie! Wow

I like how the two chief branches of Dean Winters’ career include heart-wrenchingly tragic bruisy New York cops and criminals in prime time drama series and mayhem in Allstate commercials.

Josh Thomas talks about male suicide

I wonder how feminists will react to this

Probably ignore it then go back to making male tears mugs and gifs

Actually this is a very common idea among feminists

It’s something feminists have been talking about for years it’s called toxic masculinity and it’s one of the common threads among the topic of ‘Patriarchy hurts men too’. If fact the first time I read about toxic masculinity was on a feminist blog.

If you actually read things feminists talk about instead of straw manning them you might know this but OH WELL

Yep yep yep - this is a crucial part of why men need feminism.  Because weakness and emotional expression and sexuality being seen as feminine and therefore bad is toxic to all of us.

I know that if I ever have a son I will always stress expressing emotions in a healthy way.

Also, on the more statistics side of it men usually use more violent/successful means of suicide. Example: gun shot vs. pills. Men have more successful suicides while women have more failed attempts/thoughts. http://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/pdf/suicide_datasheet-a.pdf
